Culture has been defined in various ways by sociologists and anthropologists. Following are the important definitions of culture. E.B. Tylor defines “Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, Jaw, customs and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society”.
Traditions are often thought to be glorious celebrations that come to be over time. However, I have a few traditions of my own that are not quite what one would think of when on the subject. Each has special meaning to me and an interesting story as to how it started and progressed.
Chinua Achebe’s “Dead Men’s Path” is a short story, where the writer embellished the conflicts between modern and traditional culture of a society. For someone to understand this short story you have to dig deeper into the plot, the conflict, the characters, and the whole setting itself in order to fully understand what the writer is trying to convey to the readers.
The Lottery and Tradition The story may have been seen as an attempt to look at traditions that have become questionable. In “The Lottery” Jackson attempts to compare real world traditions that are no longer relevant, with those of the story by displaying what happens when traditions goes without question, when the reason or history is not known, and when there is resistance to change.
Culture is a way of life it sets the path to who you become and how you see the world. In some stories, it shows how their culture affect their decisions. “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison, talks about a time where blacks weren't treated equally. It was their tradition to be inferior and to do as they were instructed.
A tradition is a belief or behavior (folk custom) passed down within a group or society with symbolic meaning or special significance with origins in the past. A component of folklore, common examples include holidays or impractical but socially meaningful clothes (like lawyers' wigs or military officers' spurs), but the idea has also been applied to social norms such as greetings.
It boasts a vast and varied geographic expanse, 3,600 years of written history, as well as a rich and profound culture.
